Conceived, designed and built from the ground up.

This represents my first turn keyed design-build commission.

At the time my focus was on the building end, design was essentially a tool to sell the the commission and to convey intent and structure method to my building partner.

Program parameters:

• Garaging for one antique automobile
• Ancillary area for small work shop and gardening bench
• Utilize in roof truss space for occupation if feasible
• Limit disturbance to woodland location
• Priority use of site sourced materials
• Attention to solar gain on second floor
• Quality and longevity before scale.

Foundation: Monolithic reinforced concrete — 12″ footer at 36″ sub grade; 10″ frost walls on grade; infilled and compacted 6″ mono slab fiber and steel reinforced.

Super Structure: Mortise and tenon heavy timber construction secured with wood trunnels; features continuous timber sills and top plates on principle and lean-to structures; heavy timber roof trusses; integral mortise and tenon knee wind braces located at post-girt connections. Modeled on North American timber frame traditions.

Envelope: In situ sandwich panel; interior Poplar paneling; opaque vapor barrier;  hung wall studs in filled with rigid foam; Typar house wrap; red oak siding installed in board and batten method.

Roof Membrane: Hand seamed standing seam copper.
